When Your Child Is the Bully

The internet is full of advice on what to do if your child is being bullied

However what if your child is the bully? Bullying, as defined in online sources, is a pattern of behavior that uses power, threats, and sometimes violence to repeatedly harm others. It can appear as aggressive teasing, exclusion, or humiliating others online. Many parents assume that if their child has friends, there’s nothing to worry about. But ignoring aggressive behavior or dismissing it as “normal” only enables it.
Ask yourself:

  • What if your child is the one laughing at another kid?
  • What if your child created a cruel poll about a classmate?
  • What if your child deletes messages in the WhatsApp group to exclude others?

We live in a violent world. A child who learns that putting others down makes them feel powerful is on a dangerous path and parents who look away unintentionally reinforce that behavior.
So what can parents do?

  • Teach humility: Being good at sports doesn’t mean you can laugh at those who aren’t.
  • Encourage kindness and empathy: Volunteer together, donate toys, show compassion in everyday life.
  • Monitor online communication: Make sure your child responds respectfully, never with insults or humiliation.
  • Stay curious about friendships: Ask about kids you haven’t heard of in a while — check in, show you care.
